The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) seeks to encourage the identification, protection and preservation of cultural and natural heritage around the world considered to be of outstanding universal value to humanity.
UNESCO maintains a list of World Heritage Sites that meet at least one of ten selection criteria. There are now over 1000 sites all around the world on the list, including well-known sites such as The Pyramids of Egypt, the Great Barrier Reef, and Macchu Pichu.
