I am excited to participate in this year’s Passports with Purpose Program. Since this is the first time I’ve participated in the program, I want to explain what it is all about. The travel blogging community has come together to use our influence to raise money to help others. This year’s funds will be used to build schools in Africa. But we’re not just asking for donations; we’re giving away prizes! It works something like a raffle. The participating bloggers work with sponsors to obtain prizes. For each $10 donation you make, you can enter the drawing for one of the prizes. After the contest is over on Dec. 9, winners will be randomly drawn, and hopefully, by then, we’ll have raised our goal of $115,000.
I am very excited to work with Louisville MEGA Cavern as a prize sponsor. You may have read my post about Louisville MEGA Cavern already. We had an absolute blast on their underground zip lining course. They recently opened a brand new attraction: MEGA Quest, the world’s only fully underground ropes challenge course. They have generously donated four passes to MEGA Quest and two passes to Lights Under Louisville.
The MEGA Quest attraction has ropes courses for adults and kids ages 5 and up with swinging rope and wooden bridges, cargo nets, tunnels, and a zip line. I saw this area while it was still under construction, and it looks like lots of fun. Sign up for a three-hour session and you’ll be harnessed up and can choose either an easy, medium, or hard path through the course. Even grandparents can join in the fun. It may look scary, but you’ll be completely safe, wearing over $800 worth of safety equipment.
Lights Under Louisville is the world’s only underground Christmas light show. It takes about a half hour to drive your own vehicle through the cavern filled with displays, which include traditional Christmas scenes as well as some local sights.
Here’s the fine print: The passes for MEGA Quest are valid Monday-Thursday only and expire in Dec. 2014. The Lights Under Louisville passes are also valid Monday-Thursday only and expire Jan. 1, 2014. They are not valid on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day.
The beneficiary of this year’s donations is buildOn. The goal to raise $115,000 to give to buildOn to construct three primary schools and fund three Adult Literacy Programs in the Sikasso Region of Mali, Africa. Even if you don’t win a prize, you will have the satisfaction of knowing that you helped make this possible, and that’s better than any prize, right?
Please, please consider donating to Passports with Purpose this year. Even if you aren’t interested in Louisville MEGA Quest, there’s a catalog with many other prizes. You’re sure to find something you like there.
Lastly, I want to thank the amazing people who have worked so hard to make this happen: the entire team at Passports with Purpose (all volunteers) and the sponsors: Expedia (platinum sponsor); DK Eyewitness Travel—DK Eyewitness Guides and Rough Guides(gold); TBEX (silver sponsor); HomeAway, HostelBookers, Go With Oh, and Eating London (bronze sponsors).
