I am excited to participate in this year’s Passports with Purpose Program. Since this is the first time I’ve participated in the program, I want to explain what it is all about. The travel blogging community has come together to use our influence to raise money to help others. This year’s funds will be used to build schools in Africa. But we’re not just asking for donations; we’re giving away prizes! It works something like a raffle. The participating bloggers work with sponsors to obtain prizes. For each $10 donation you make, you can enter the drawing for one of the prizes. After the contest is over on Dec. 9, winners will be randomly drawn, and hopefully, by then, we’ll have raised our goal of $115,000.
I am very excited to work with the Louisville Convention and Visitors Bureau as a prize sponsor. I like Louisville so much that I’ve been there three times this year! Louisville offers a wide variety of activities for adults and children. Please check out my posts about kid-friendly attractions like the Louisville Slugger Museum and Factory, Kentucky Science Center, and Louisville MEGA Cavern (another Passports with Purpose Prize Donor). Adults might be interested in Louisville’s Bourbon Trails. Did you know that over 1/3 of the world’s bourbon comes from Louisville?
While I highly recommend you take a trip to Louisville to sample the bourbon yourself, I’m thrilled that the Louisville Convention and Visitors Bureau has donated a Bourbon Country Gift Basket as a prize. This goodie basket contains everything you need from Bourbon Country. It includes a Just Add Bourbon t-shirt, an “I’d rather be drinking bourbon” koozie, a Bourbon Country coaster, a flask from the Urban Bourbon Trail, a bourbon-flavored lip balm, an Urban Bourbon Trail pen, an Urban Bourbon Trail Passport and a bottle of Old Forester Bourbon – the first bottled bourbon, and still distilled and bottled in Louisville.
Here’s the fine print: You must be at least 21 years old to win this prize and must live within the 48 contiguous states.
The beneficiary of this year’s donations is buildOn. The goal to raise $115,000 to give to buildOn to construct three primary schools and fund three Adult Literacy Programs in the Sikasso Region of Mali, Africa. Even if you don’t win prize, you will have the satisfaction of knowing that you helped make this possible, and that’s better than any prize, right?
Please, please consider donating to Passports with Purpose this year. Even if you aren’t interested in the Bourbon Country Gift Basket, there’s a catalog with many other prizes. You’re sure to find something you like there.
Lastly, I want to thank the amazing people who have worked so hard to make this happen: the entire team at Passports with Purpose (all volunteers) and the sponsors: Expedia (platinum sponsor); DK Eyewitness Travel—DK Eyewitness Guides and Rough Guides(gold); TBEX (silver sponsor); HomeAway, HostelBookers, Go With Oh, and Eating London (bronze sponsors).
