I simply can’t imagine a more colorful hotel than the Inn @ Northrup Station in Portland, Oregon. This place says fun from the moment you walk in the door. While I checked in, my kids relaxed in the breakfast area. The centerpiece on each table was a vase filled with colorful candies. What kid wouldn’t like that? (Fruit was also available, BTW.)
We took the elevator up to our floor. The funky floors and walls were a hint of the kind of furnishings we’d find inside. The inn is decorated with fun and funky artwork by local artists.
While I love that we’ve been able to visit so many places around the country, there is one negative about this style of travel: you don’t have time to see everything and have to make some tough choices. And that’s just how I felt when we visited Portland, Oregon. The nice people at Travel Oregon and Travel Portland arranged for us to have a pass to visit many of the city’s popular attractions, but there were so many places and so little time! We considered the many options and decided to visit the OMSI, the Oregon Museum of Science and […]
A must-see on any trip to Bend, Oregon, is the High Desert Museum. This is one of those museums that has a little bit of everything, and is perfect for families.
The museum is a combination of a history museum, art museum, zoo, living history museum, and park. That may sound chaotic, but all the exhibits are tied together with a common theme: the High Desert, a region that covers parts of eight states and British Columbia. The museum is both fun and educational. Many thanks to the museum for providing us complimentary admission so that I could research […]
McMenamins is well known in Oregon for its hotels, pubs, breweries, and other businesses that are housed in historic buildings. I’ll admit, though, that it had been 20 years since I had been to Oregon and I hadn’t heard of McMenamins. I figure that if I wasn’t aware of them, then many of my readers might not be familiar with them either. The McMenamin brothers, Mike and Brian, opened their first pub in 1983, and now they own over 50 establishments in Oregon and Washington. We had the opportunity to stay one night in the McMenamins Old St. Francis School […]
When I was planning our trip to Oregon, I turned to fellow Family Travel Blogger and Oregon resident, Amy Whitley of Pit Stops for Kids, for recommendations. I specifically asked for quintessential Oregon experiences. Amy thought we should experience the outdoors in the High Desert region and specifically recommended rafting on the Deschutes River near Bend, so when I contacted Travel Oregon to plan our itinerary, I requested a rafting excursion. Travel Oregon made arrangements with Sun Country Tours who offered complimentary admission for me as a member of the media. Travel Oregon split the cost with me for the […]
Our family loves the national parks. Ever since I’d first seen the blue waters of Crater Lake in photographs, I’ve wanted to visit. But before I talk about the park, I have an announcement: Our trip to Oregon was significant because it marked my husband’s 50th state! He is the first in our family to achieve this. (I’m next with 47 states so far.)
We are grateful to Travel Oregon and its partners, including Southern Oregon, for hosting our trip. They made our arrangements and negotiated discounted rates or complimentary admission for parts of our trip. Now, on to […]
