Great Lakes Science Center is located right on Lake Erie in Cleveland, Ohio. It’s the fourth science museum I’ve written about this week and I must point out that I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the lack of redundancy between museums. I genuinely feel like each museum offers something different. I know I’m probably starting to sound like a broken record, but I really recommend getting a membership to your local museum so that you can take advantage of the ASTC (Association of Science-Technology Centers) Passport Program which allows you to visit science museums around the country without paying admission. We’ve […]
You may have read in my bio that I am one of the authors of a book titled Adventures Around Cincinnati: A Parent’s Guide to Unique and Memorable Places to Explore with your Kids. I am very excited to announce that my co-author, Laura Hoevener, and I have just released a second edition. I’d like to tell you more about it.
The book has three parts. In Part One, Laura and I discuss creating memories with your family. For us, this isn’t about promoting tourism or entertaining kids. We strongly believe that our travel experiences with our kids are […]
The Holden Arboretum is located in Kirtland, OH, about a half-hour east of Cleveland. While “arboretum” may not be the first word that comes to mind when thinking of fun outings for your kids, this one definitely needs to be on your radar screen. Not even sure what an arboretum is? Here’s a definition from their Visitor’s Guide: “A living museum, an arboretum is a collection of woody plants, with plants labeled, catalogued and mapped.” Holden Arboretum is one of the largest in the country. It has 3,500 acres with gardens and collections comprising 600 of those acres.
Sometimes I am ultra-detailed in my vacation planning. After all, if you want to visit all 50 states, you do need to have a plan. But that doesn’t mean that I’m afraid to be spontaneous. I love to travel and when an opportunity presents itself, I usually jump on it. Last summer, my husband had to go on a business trip to Cleveland, which is a four-hour drive from where we live. You know what that means, right? Free hotel! It isn’t often that my husband travels somewhere within driving distance while the kids are out of school. In fact, […]
If you’ve read my book, then you may have read about Jungle Jim’s International Market, an amazing grocery store on the outskirts of Cincinnati. Recently, Jungle Jim’s opened a second store that’s even bigger than the original store and my checkout clerk told me that it is the largest grocery store in the United States. Wow! And this one’s even closer to my house. The nice part about having a blog is that not only can I tell my readers about the latest and greatest, I can show you pictures. When I told my sister over the phone about our […]
Cincinnati has some very unique museums and the American Sign Museum is one of them. I’ll admit that this one is a little more near and dear to my heart than most museums. My father is a retired sign painter and I grew up around signs. The first time I visited the sign museum was with my father and our tour was geared toward sign professionals. On my most recent visit, I went with my book co-author and our kids (plus or minus a few). The American Sign Museum recently celebrated its grand re-opening in a new location, in the […]
You might be thinking I’m a little confused about geography. After all, this is a blog about travelling all 50 states in the USA, and Pompeii, well, that’s in Italy. But thanks to a traveling museum exhibition, you can get a glimpse of Pompeii without leaving the USA. This exhibition, A Day in Pompeii, is currently at the Cincinnati Museum Center through Aug. 12, 2012 Aug. 19, 2012.
Since this is also a blog about travelling with kids, I’m going to approach this by looking at both the positives and negatives of taking kids to this exhibit. After all, […]
Believe it or not, I first heard about Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams at a book festival. Jeni Britton Bauer, the creator of these delectable treats, is also the author of a cookbook titled Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams at Home. Her book and my book, Adventures Around Cincinnati – A Parent’s Guide to Unique and Memorable Places to Explore with your Kids, were both selected to be part of the Books by the Banks Cincinnati USA Book Festival last fall. I would have loved to talk to Jeni about her yummy frozen concoctions, but I was at my own table most […]
I think it’s about time that I wrote a post about my home state of Ohio. While there are many wonderful things to see in my home city of Cincinnati, which my co-author and I wrote about in our book, Adventures Around Cincinnati, today I’m going to tell you about one of my favorite attractions in Ohio which isn’t in my book because it isn’t within two hours of Cincinnati.
The Wilds is a wildlife conservation center that looks like it belongs in Africa, or at least somewhere more exotic than Ohio.
Take a closer look–those are animals down […]
